Aranthangi city
Aranthangi Fort is a major attraction in the town of Aranthangi. Aranthangi is the second largest town of the district of Pudukkottai in Tamil Nadu. This ruined fort adds to the archaeological treasure of the district. But little has been known about this fort in Tamil Nadu.
The town of Aranthangi used to be a populous town and formerly it was a part of Thanjavur district. The Fort in Aranthangi has a unique feature. The fort was not built with bricks or stones unlike other forts. But its structure had been filled with mud. But no remnants of palace or any ruins of buildings have been found here. Thus very bare information have been gathered from the Aranthangi Fort.
From the very little information that could be collected from the ruin of the Aranthangi Fort in Tamil Nadu, it can be assumed that it may have been built by the Tondaimans. The lineage of the Tondaimans is hardly known. They were the feudal chieftains who exercised their control over the Aranthangi region. The Tondaimans controlled this region from about 15 th century to 18 th century.
Since not much could be known from the ruin, Aranthangi Fort in Tamil Nadu will always remain an object of curiosity to the archaeologists of Tamil Nadu and will always find a place in the list of the forts in Tamil Nadu as a tourist spot.
